Review: The Best Man by Barbie Bohrman

Christy's 4 star review:

The Best Man was a fun, sexy, and sweet story! I loved Barbie’s take on ‘The Best Man’ and how it was thrown into this story-line. It made for a highly entertaining and slightly angsty read that I enjoyed very much.

Veronica Webber is recently divorced and now living in the big city. She’s starting over and doing things on her own terms. One night, she decides to go out on her own and she gets a blast from the past at the bar she’s at. Trevor Allen is there. Trevor used to be good friends with Vern’s ex. In fact, he was the best man at their wedding.

What Veronica doesn't know, is that from the first time Trevor laid eyes on Veronica, almost a decade ago, she left a strong and lasting impression. Trevor is a bit of a ladies man and doesn’t really do relationships, but he and Veronica become close friends. The feelings that Trevor has always had for Vern come boiling close to the surface…

I’ve heard that half the battle was admitting when you had a problem. So here I was admitting that I had a problem, and it was this: I was in over my head with Veronica.

It was great to see Veronica and Trevor together. I loved their banter, the way their friendship grew, and the chemistry they had was palpable. It’s a bit taboo to start something in these circumstances, but Vern and Trevor can’t help the way they feel.

There is a bit of angst towards the end, but nothing too over the top. The drama was just enough to keep you fully engaged. I loved the way Trevor went to win Vern back after he screwed up. Heck, I just loved Trevor period! Veronica was great, too.

If you’re looking for a book that’s a lot of fun, has some steam and some laughs, I recommend giving this one a go!

Something More Than This is a friends to lovers story. I love couples that start as friends first. They make my heart happy. Once again, Barbie brings us a light, sweet and funny story. This had a little angst and some steam, but overall was a feel good read!

Katy Lewis has a job she absolutely loves as a sports reporter for her local paper. She lives with her best friend, Mimi- who is a hoot, and has two older brothers who love her fiercely. Her editor and boss, Dylan Sterling is also a very close friend and has been for years. She is content with life. Then her childhood best friend, Conner comes back into the picture and wants to meet up with Katy.

Katy had feelings for Conner growing up. It’s safe to say, he was her first love. She’s not sure if seeing him for the first time in years will bring those feelings back. Meanwhile, in the office, Rachel is making a move for Dylan and it’s bringing other feelings for Katy. Jealously. She is jealous of Rachel. Dylan has always been a good friend to her, but there are other feelings there too. This is a bit of a stressful situation for Katy. Does she go for Conner? He’s here, it seems he’s interested… but there is Dylan who has always been there for her and seems to have had feelings for her too… I know it seems like this is a love triangle, but it really didn’t feel that way to me. And the guy I was rooting for actually got the girl for once so go me!

I want him. I want us. And I’m willing to face my fears to make it happen.

I thought Katy was a fantastic heroine and I really liked both of the guys in the story. Her man is super sweet and swoony and the one sex scene we got between them showed that their chemistry was off the charts! Honestly, this was a great read for me and I feel like it could have been an amazing 5-star read for me if there was more romance and we got more time with the couple together at the end! I was jonesing for more of their story.

If you’re looking for a sweet and enjoyable read that’s a friends to lovers story this is one I’d recommend! I’m hoping Barbie will give us a book about either one of Katy’s brothers!

Starting Over is the third Barbie Bohrman book I’ve read and it’s safe to say I’m a fan. Barbie knows how to write lovable characters, great family dynamics and fun, yet heartwarming stories. Playing it Safe is by far my favorite of hers. I’m not sure if anyone could top Julia and Alex. But guess what- you get some Julia and Alex in this story. It’s Vanessa’s book, and Vanessa is Alex’s older sister.

I remember Vanessa and Josie fondly from Playing it Safe. I loved them both and their dynamic as a mother daughter duo. It’s been just Josie and Vanessa for so long, Vanessa doesn’t remember any other way. Josie always comes first.

Josie's been my partner in crime since the day she came into this world. It's always been us against the world. And I will always put her first before anything or anybody, including myself.

When Vanessa meets Josie’s science teacher, she is instantly attracted and having feelings and thinking things she hasn’t felt or thought in a long time. Josie is totally on board with her dating. Especially if it’s Mr. Cameron Thomas. Vanessa wants to try, but she still has her reservations. Cameron is understanding and patient with her, but at the same time knows when to say something and when to push.

“When will it ever be the right time for you? Because, if you think life will ever get easier, it won’t. Sometimes you have to take a chance.”

Just as Vanessa starts to realize starting over might be okay, something (or someone) re-enters her life and shakes everything right of her axis.

Starting Over is a tale of just that- Vanessa starting her life over. I found this story sweet, heartwarming and lovable. I do wish that we got more scenes with this couple. I wanted more Cameron and Vanessa scenes!I like how much Barbie’s books focus on family, and this family is fantastic. Overall, I enjoyed this one. 4 stars!

Excerpt
True love’s kiss . . .

It sounds so innocent and hopeful, and taken at face value it’s a chaste promise of romance and never ending, undying love brought on by a simple kiss between two people. However, when you think about, at least as much as I have, when exactly would you know with all the certainty in your heart that a kiss is the true love’s kiss?

Does it exist merely in fairy tales? Or, if the right man comes along, does his love for

you and all the passion in his heart somehow flow through that barely there brush of lips against yours, until your own heart is overflowing with an emotion that you’ve never felt before? And as a result of this

one little kiss, will you fall head over heels and madly in love with this person, forsaking all others for the rest of your life and vice versa?

The dreamer in me loves the allure of the fantasy. However, the realist in me has a hard time wrapping my head around the whole idea because, really? One kiss could have that much power? I highly doubt it.
