5 Archer stars

I am in awe of this book. It hit all my five star plus buttons. I know it’s early, but I can already tell this is going to be in my top 10 of the year. I loved it that much!

Archer Hale has spent his life in solitude. Something traumatic happened to him when he was seven years old and left his voice box so damaged he could no longer speak. He lived with his uncle, never leaving the property. His uncle passed away a while ago, and he’s been alone ever since.  He knows it’s not normal, but it’s what is best for everyone.

I was a freak. I was out here alone and isolated for a reason- I was to blame for so much tragedy, so much pain. I was worthless.

He comes to town every once in a while to buy necessities, and most just ignore him. That is until Bree Prescott shows up. Bree leaves her hometown of Cincinnati Ohio (which just happens to be MY hometown ;)) to head to the small lakeside town of Pelion Maine. Tragedy has struck her as well, and she needs to get away for a while. Start fresh. There are things she’s leaving behind. Things that haunt her, but she’s working on it.

“You are going to be okay, Bree. You are strong and you are going to be happy again. Do you hear me? There’s something good about this place. Do you feel it?”

The first time Bree runs into Archer, she can tell there is something about him. Something she wants to know more about. She asks around about the mysterious Archer Hale and finds out that he can’t speak. Bree doesn’t let that stop her. After living her life with a hearing impaired father, she knows how to sign. She wants to talk to Archer.

Archer is hesitant to let Bree in. He has been isolated and secluded for so long, he finds it hard to be around her at first. Bree Prescott is a very determined individual. She knows what she wants, and she wants to be friends with Archer Hale. She hates the way everyone in town sees him, but Archer doesn’t seem to mind. She only wishes everyone could get to know the real Archer. The Archer she’s come to know.

If they only knew.
If who only knew what?

Everyone in town. Some of them think you’re not right in the head, you know. It’s laughable really. Why do you let them think that?

Just easier that way.
I don’t like it.

It’s been this way for a long time, Bree, it’s fine. It works for everyone involved.

Archer and Bree start making a habit of seeing one another every day. Little by little, she gets him to break out of his shell. Then there is the haircut. Who would have thought something so simple as a haircut could bring some feelings to light. Archer is obviously inexperienced when it comes to women, but he wants Bree, and he thinks she feels the same.

Did you... want me to kiss you yesterday? Did you want me to touch you?

Yes
I wanted to kiss you, to touch you. I just didn’t know... if you wanted that too.

Bree more than wants Archer. She is falling for him.

   photo 5641dc81-e805-4f31-978a-4d04c104db58_zpsd4682050.jpg

Bree tries to get Archer to come out more, to join the land of the living. He’s not sure if thats something he can do, but for Bree, he’ll try.

You are a real person, you can live a life like other people do.

With the friendship and love Archer and Bree are developing, there is also some drama and suspense going on in the background. Archer’s family is full of secrets. His aunt and cousin run the town. He’s lost those most important to him and he has secrets. Secrets he’s never told a soul. Until Bree. Archer’s cousin Travis appears to have Archer’s best interests at heart, but it becomes evident early on thats not the case. Bree tries to protect Archer from it all. Archer doesn’t want her protection. Just her love. She is everything to him. He never thought he could have a love like this. Never dreamed it could happen.

“What are your dreams, Archer?”

‘I didn’t know enough to dream you, Bree, but somehow you came true anyway.’

   photo 41d9fa2e-cfa2-4837-a9df-507b38728adb_zps3a12fc39.jpg

Archer gets ideas put in his head. Can Bree really be happy in this life, small town Maine, a guy who can’t talk, isn’t social? He worries he will be a burden to her and thats something he can’t handle.

‘This is that burden I was talking about, Bree. This is what the burden of loving me looks like.’

“Loving you isn’t a burden. Loving you is an honor and a joy, Archer.”

When both of their pasts come rearing to the future, will they be able to handle it? Be able to stand together and be there for one another?

   photo 8b178838-d414-4fd3-adf0-680e9dd69690_zps9aeb2d95.jpg

Bree and Archer together are magnificent. Everything between them was beautiful and genuine. Their friendship turned relationship was wonderful to watch grow and develop. It is a rarity, but when I find a book where I love the hero and the heroine equally, it makes me a very happy reader. That is the case here. Bree is sweet, strong, understanding, patient and kind. She is sincere. The way she treated Archer with kindness and respect from the start made me love her even more. Then there is Archer Hale. The silent, beautiful man who stole Bree’s heart. Archer is broken, awkward, shy and  enigmatic. He is not your typical hero, but that only made me love him more. He had the sweetest soul and that is what made me fall in love with this beautiful broken man. The love, the chemistry, the friendship, the communication, the attraction and the understanding made their relationship special.

This was such an exceptional book for me. Bree and Archer’s story will stay with me for a long time. A memorable story about two remarkable people who find love in an unforseeable situation. An emotional journey that had me laughing, crying, and swoooing. The writing was exquisite, every page captivated me. This has taken the spot of my favorite book in 2014 (so far). I would highly recommend it to all!

I was finally home. Not the place, but his arms. Archer’s arms were my home- the only place i wanted to be, the place where I felt safe. The place where I felt loved.

Excerpt:
Eva took Julian’s, still full, glass out of his hand and rested it on the table. She threw her leg over his, straddling him - wobbly.
‘So you think you’re the boss,’ she said.
‘I’m not? Julian replied casually.
‘Let’s just see about that.’
Eva unbuttoned his shirt, two and three buttons at a time, stopping to rub sweet kisses against his chest. Julian took a deep breath and eased his back further against the soft cushions behind. The last buttons were stubborn but Eva won and tugged his shirt aggressively off and tossed it to the floor. The force left faint red marks on his wrists, and Eva dotted her lips along the pinched lines and slowly kissed them better.
He liked it, Eva knew. She could feel him grow beneath her. She pushed her weight harder onto him and ground her ass slowly against his throbbing cock.
‘Don’t tease, Evangeline,’ Julian warned.
‘Who’s teasing?’ She smiled, grinding just a little more.
‘I can’t,’ Julian whispered softly. ‘You’re not ready.’
‘I am. I really am.’
Julian caught Eva’s wrist and flipped her on to the sheepskin rug on the floor. She landed roughly and looked up at him, uncertain. She worried he was angry, maybe she was too assertive. Some men don’t like that, a friend had warned her about it once when she was in high school.
Eva lay still, her mind racing in anticipation of Julian’s next move. A mild, summer wind had picked up outside and it distracted her for a moment and she felt a chill as it whispered against the window. Goosebumps lined her body as the cold of the timber floor penetrated the rug beneath her. She shivered a little but she never took her eyes off Julian.
Julian kneeled between her legs. He was steady and moving slowly. Lustfully slow, and it took Eva a moment to realise her mouth was open. She shut it again but the anticipation didn’t disappear. Fuck he was hot. She’d never seen anyone with such a perfect face before. She’d always been so sure of her type. The sweet and baby faced, be your best friend type. But Julian didn’t fit the bill. In fact, he was so far the opposite, it was scary. He was a man’s man, and, even though it shocked the hell out of her, she liked it, she liked him - a lot.
She couldn’t take her eyes off his strong and toned body hiding behind his impeccable, tailored suit. A small scar above his left eyebrow and a five o’clock shadow along his firm jawline offered him an alluring ruggedness that was hard to resist. His dark skin contrasted against her peaches and cream complexion like the perfect compliment. She ran the tip of her finger over the simple, black horseshoe tattooed on his left peek.
‘What’s this?’ she asked softly, aware that she was prying.
‘A tattoo.’ Julian smirked.
‘Ha ha, very funny. I know that. I mean, what is it?’
‘It’s a horseshoe, Evangeline.’
Eva shook her head and smiled. ‘I mean, what does it symbolise? Or is it just that you like horses, or something?’
Julian exhaled slowly and his dark chocolate eyes glistened as he stared into Eva’s. He cupped her hand in the palm of his and pressed his moist lips softly against her wrist leaving a single kiss.
‘You’re the first person to ever ask me that,’ Julian said, still holding her hand. ‘I do like horses but that’s not what it’s about.’
Eva chewed her bottom lip and held her breath. He was actually about to tell her something about himself, she hoped she didn’t look too shocked.
‘You can start up here.’ Julian placed his finger against her wrist and began to trace a shape on her skin. ‘And in the blink of an eye, without warning, you can drop to the bottom.’ His finger slowly ran down her skin. ‘But that doesn’t define who you are, Evangeline. It’s the climb back to the top, that defines who you are. And how high you climb is up to you.’ His finger completed the pattern of an invisible horseshoe as he softly spoke out his action. ‘Down, around and back up…understand?’
Eva pushed her lips tight together and forced an uncomfortable bubble of air down her throat. She’d been climbing for a long time but, she was no closer to the top. She sniffled and looked up to meet his stare. She didn’t want him to notice her getting upset, but she wasn’t hiding it as well as she’d like to.
He pulled her closer to him and Eskimo kissed her playfully. ‘The past doesn’t define you.’
The lump of air in Eva’s throat hurt. Was he telling her something about himself or something about her? Damn, he was as smart as he was gorgeous. And my God was he gorgeous, Eva thought, beginning to undress him with her eyes, but Julian noticed the naughty gleam in her eye.
‘Something I can help you with, Evangeline?’ he asked.

5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!!

How do I express the love I have for this book? When I signed up for the tour, I didn't even read the synopsis. I went in totally blind and sometimes this is the best way to go into a book.  So I started reading Rules of Harte and right away I was hooked.

We are introduced to Evangeline Andrews as she gets an invitation to a work party. Eva doesn't think too much of it though, so she rushes off to a meeting. During the meeting Mia(the office bitch) calls her out as being new. Eva is very socially awkward and becomes embarrassed easily. So she wants to impress her fellow co-workers so she looks up an escort service for her date to the company ball.

On the website she gets instant messages from a man named Julian. When he asks why she needed a male escort she retorts back with "I'm not sure I do." Julian doesn't respond and suddenly goes offline. Eva decides its fate's way of saying "don't go to the ball" so she sends out an email to Mia that she won't be able to attend the ball. Problem solved. Or is it?

Upon arrival at work, she is met with a pissed off Mia, who informs her that Mr. Doe(the boss) would like to see her in his office. When Eva arrives she talks to the secretary and we learn he sleeps with the female employees.  After talking to Mr. Doe he informs her that she will indeed be going to the ball. So her only option for a date is to try to reach Julian again. Once she reaches him and tells him she needs his service they exchange numbers. And this where you need to fasten your seat belt ladies and gentleman because the ride gets bumpy from here until the end.

We get little bits and pieces of the story in Julian's POV and I would love to have more in his POV. The sex scenes were hot, but I have 1 complaint. Some of the terminology was bad. Seriously, I cringed on 2 of the word choices. But it wasn't used repeatedly so I didn't factor that into my rating at all. As soon as I finished the book, I logged onto my Facebook blog page and ran a contest for 3 e-copies. When I start gifting out copies of a book, you know I loved the story so much I had to share it with somebody else.

Kudos to Brooke for her debut novel, she is one to watch out for! I predict great things for her future writing career. And I will be (im)patiently waiting for book 2 to get more Julian and Eva.

Author bio and links:

Brooke has too many of a lot of things; shoes, books, and kids. Luckily she loves them all to pieces. She never has too much wine, if you believe that.

Rules of Harte is her debut into the steamy stuff and she's currently working on the second book in the series.
