Daring Fate by Megan Erickson - Excerpt & Review
DARING FATE
Megan Erickson is a USA Today bestselling author of romance that sizzles. Her books have a touch of nerd, a dash of humor, and always have a happily ever after. A former journalist, she switched to fiction when she decided she likes writing her own endings better.
Silver Tip Pack #1

We all have tragic backstories in today’s world...
I wake up chained to the wall of a dark cell aware of two things: I failed my sister, and I smell my enemy.
I wake up chained to the wall of a dark cell aware of two things: I failed my sister, and I smell my enemy.
When I’m taken to meet Dare, the alpha of the Silver Tip pack, I’m sure I’m about to lose my throat. The last thing I expect is for the Alpha to recognize me as his fated mate. No way is he going to let me go now, and I still have to find a way to rescue my sister.
As I plot my escape to save her, I find that if I leave, Dare could be killed by power-hungry members of his pack. And now he’s more to me than my fated mate—my heart is involved. With time ticking by on my sister’s life, I have to make a choice I never thought I’d face—my sister’s life or my mate’s? That’s if I can survive the undead shifters intent on killing me first…

Dare’s eyes flashed. His fingernails were still curved into claws, his canines descended, and a dusting of fur still covered his shoulders. He looked wild and a little feral. “Shift.” His voice was garbled, and I backed up a step, dipping my head as I whined.
He took a heaving breath and the fur on his shoulders disappeared. His eyes closed and when they opened, they were nearly black. “Shift,” he ordered again.
My body obeyed.
Never in my life had anyone been able to command me to shift, but Dare could. His command was a swell of power that I couldn’t deny. My bones cracked as I shifted back to human form, then I collapsed onto my stomach and panted as I tested my limbs. My ribs weren’t even tender.
Fuck yeah, shifter power.
I rose to my feet, shaking out my arms as I lifted my head to meet Dare’s gaze.
His teeth were bared, eyes cycling between green and black like a two-toned tornado.
He moved so fast, I didn’t even see his arm, didn’t realize he was in motion until a hand wrapped around my neck and claws dug into my throat. He hauled me against him, and with my feet not touching the floor, the only thing I could do was clutch his shoulders and wrap my legs around his waist.
“Mine,” he growled against my lips.
Not gonna lie, I was fucking terrified. Dare was only half there, his Were pulsing inside his skin. I didn’t know his Were, and I hoped to hell Dare had enough power to stay human.
I shifted my hands to grip his face, my fingers digging into his scalp as I rutted against him. The mating instinct overtook all my other thoughts. So, despite my terror, I was hard as hell. “Yours,” I muttered back.
That seemed to appease the Were, because Dare’s eyes stopped flickering, finally resting on green.
His chest rumbled, and he pressed our lips together—hard, punishing, furious—before delving his tongue inside.
The kiss was possessive and all-consuming. While I’d fucked around plenty, I’d never been kissed in my life, so I didn’t know how to deal with it. My head was spinning, my body on fire, ass clenching in anticipation for being taken. I wanted it. God help me, but I wanted him to pin me down and fuck me until I broke.
I wanted to be owned.
So I kissed him back, pushing against his tongue with mine, gnashing his lips with my teeth, which only seemed to spur him on harder.
The room tilted, and then Dare was looming over me, my back against the mattress as he gripped our cocks in one hand and began to pump. My cock was leaking pre-come, coating my stomach and mixing with Dare’s pre-release.
His shoulders bunched as he held himself above me, his attention on stroking us. His gaze lifted to mine, and when our eyes met, I was thankful they were green. He peeled his lips back, revealing his sharp teeth. “I love the smell of you, but it’s wrong. It’s all wrong.”
Great. I prepared to have my throat ripped out for mistaken mate identity. “What?”
“You don’t smell like me yet.” He ran his nose up the column of my neck and then nipped my ear. “I can’t be around you anymore without imprinting my smell on you.”
“Make me smell like you, then.” I reached down to grip his balls. “I’m all healed now. Take me.”
In the far recesses of my brain, I knew this meant the life I had planned for my brother and sister would change. But I couldn’t help it, not while Dare’s scent was in my nostrils, while his power was surrounding me, and as his hand left my cock to swirl through the wetness on my stomach.
I was going to be mated. To a Were. And there was no going back.
Bella's 4 star review
It would seem that paranormal romance is on the rise again - or maybe I'm just finding that I'm reading them for the first time in a long time.
Megan Erickson is one of my drop everything authors, so even though paranormal is not my go to genre, I had to check it out.
Daring Fate is the first book in the Silver Tip Pack Series. It sets the stage for this new dystopian society where a virus has wiped out humans and werewolves, weres, and noweres take over. I must admit I got a bit tripped up on the difference between werewolves and weres, but the attraction between the main characters totally stole my attention.
The moment Reese and Dare meet, they sense that they are true mates. I love this primal attraction. The way the smell of the other person pulls them together, the way they instinctively need to be close. And I love that it is two MEN fated as mates.
Gah. The attraction between Reese and Dare is OFF THE CHARTS HOT.
But fated mates apparently have to learn to like and trust each other, and their situation is a bit complicated.
I loved watching these two fall in love.
I loved their chemistry.
I loved the alpha aspect of Dare.
I can't wait to read more in this series!!
Bottom line: great start to a new paranormal m/m romance series!!

After a decade of serving in the Army, everyone still expects me to be Dominic 'Nicky' Costigan—the skirt-chasing player. They don't know I've been spending my days trying to figure out my post-military life. Including how to pick up guys.
When I meet Luke on a hookup app, he makes it clear it's for one-night only. That's fine with me, because I'm down to see what this silver fox can do. But after I arrive at his doorstep, it doesn't take long to realize we have serious chemistry, and we end up meeting again.
He's got more walls around his heart than a military base, but I think he's as addicted to me as I am to him. He can't resist me for long. I mean, who can? Except Luke's rules exist for a reason, and when I test his limits, things get complicated. Maybe too complicated.
Bella's Review: 4.5 Stars!!!
4.5 Stars!!!!
Amazing story about Dominic and Luke!
Strong Signal was absolutely amazing. AMAZING. Seriously, if you haven't read book one, please stop right now and one click. Garrett and Kai were amazing.
Fast Connection is about Dominic and Luke. Dominic is home from the military. He's not feeling so sure about his place in life. He's living at home, working in his parent's deli and realizing that he has outgrown living with his parents. But he needs to get a plan in place before he moves out.
In the meantime.... he really wants to explore his bisexuality. Being with men is relatively new and he wants to experience more. So....how does one find a hookup? Grindr of course.
Luke is 39. He's divorced with two teenage kids. But he's also bisexual. And he likes hooking up with young men. And he likes to keep his hookups very separate from his family life. And he never does repeats. And he doesn't talk much. LOL. Took me a while to warm up to Luke.
These two meet for a fast hookup.
But neither one can stop thinking about the other.
What I loved about this book:
~The writing. So easy to read. It's always so impressive when 2 authors collaborate and these two have a magic recipe. The writing is seamless.
~ Alternating POV. I'm so glad we get into both character's head.
~ Chemistry. Man. Luke and Dominic have chemistry.
~ Banter/texting. Love the back and forth!
~ Flaws. We are all flawed. Luke and Dominic are not perfect. Their journey to HEA is not easy. It's messy. Families aren't always cookie cutter families. But I love how each one becomes a better person throughout the story.
Bottom line: Fast Connection is a great story about coming to terms with who you are, embracing yourself and letting your family in. It's sweet, angsty, sexy and addictive!!

Santino Hassell was raised by a conservative family, but he was anything but traditional. He grew up to be a smart-mouthed, school cutting grunge kid, then a transient twenty-something, and eventually transformed into an unlikely romance author.
Santino writes queer romance that is heavily influenced by the gritty, urban landscape of New York City, his belief that human relationships are complex and flawed, and his own life experiences.

Romance trades the open road for the high seas in the latest from the author of Focus on Me and Trust the Focus...
Perpetually shy, Quinn Mathers is content to remain in the shadow of his brash best friend Jess Hartman. But before their college graduation, he and Jess have planned one last hurrah: a spring break Caribbean cruise.
And it won’t be just any cruise. On board are members of the reality show Trip League, which follows young twenty-somethings on adventures around the world. Since the show’s beginning, Quinn has been fascinated by J. R. Butler, with his amazing body, warm eyes, and killer grin. Unfortunately, he’s straight—or so the world thinks.
At nineteen, J. R. signed a contract to play straight for the show, and there’s no way to get out of it now. Yet with each passing day, Quinn and J. R. find it harder to keep their hands off each other and to keep out of the camera’s frame. But when the lens finally focuses on them, J. R. must decide if he’s willing to risk his career by admitting his bisexuality, and Quinn must determine if he's bold enough to stand in the spotlight with the man of his dreams...
Bella's 5 Star Review
I loved Quinn and Jay's story!!!
Quinn and his best friend Jess go on a cruise during spring break of their senior year of college. Quinn is ..... an old soul. His parents have ingrained the importance of looking at the consequences of any action he takes before he takes it. So instead of having carefree fun teenage years, he's forgotten to live in the moment and have fun. He's determined to do just that on this cruise.
JR is one of the celebrities on the cruise. When he signed the contract to be on Trip League, he agreed to play a straight guy, even though he's bisexual. He invented a girlfriend so that it didn't look suspicious that he didn't date much. The producers of the reality show like to portray JR as a hot tempered jerk...but of course there is more to him than that.
Quinn has a secret crush on JR. He can't help but wonder if the reality show has type cast the members and the more he gets to know "Jay" instead of "JR" the more he likes him. On a cruise ship of 1500 people, he doubts he'll even get the chance to meet him.
But he does. They meet and the chemistry is there. JR tries to deny his attraction to Quinn.
You know how that goes!!
Things I loved about this book:
~ Alternating POV - my favorite way to read. Quinn wears his heart on his sleeve. But JR is a tough one to figure out. I'm so glad we got to be inside his head.
~ Quinn. OMG. This character was amazing. Red hair, freckles, pale skin that flushes easily and an old soul who wants to be young and carefree. I loved Quinn and couldn't help but cheer for him to get a HEA.
~ Jay. Black, bisexual but stuck playing a straight man because his agent thinks that is the only way he will get work as an actor. He feels trapped and wants to help his family financially. I'm so glad his family was supportive. They wanted him to be happy. I wanted him to be happy too!!
~ Angst. I understood why Jay needed to keep his attraction to Quinn a secret. But I felt for Quinn. For once, he didn't want to be someone's secret. Ugh.
~ Supporting characters. I loved Jess, Levi, even Casey.
~ I also loved that we got to catch up with the characters from the previous books. They weren't main stars of the story, but it was great to see that everyone is still happy and doing well.
~ Vulnerability. I love it when the characters show their vulnerability. Jay and Quinn really became vulnerable to each other and you got to see them grow as people throughout the story.
Bottom line: READ THIS BOOK!! I love this series. Start with book 1: Trust the Focus!!

Strong Signal

Bella's 5 Star Review
This book. was. SO. Good. I mean, I just get a silly grin on my face thinking about how good it was.
Garrett is a solder serving his last tour in Afghanistan. He passes the time by playing his favorite video game. Kai is a video "gaymer" who has his own live stream channel with a following of subscribers that watch him play and sample upcoming video games.
I love that these two meet online while playing a video game. Kai kills Garrett and Garrett looks him up.... and can't believe his eyes when he sees Kai's face. He is instantly attracted to him.
They develop this .... friendship online which quickly blossoms into flirtation.
The banter...
I LOVE this online exchange. Starts with e-mails, progresses to instant messaging, then to skype.
And their chemistry just can't be contained by the internet. Yowza!!! These two are so hot together.
By the time they meet in person, they are completely smitten with each other. So they can gallop off into the sunset with their HEA, right?
But it's not all rainbows and roses. Kai hasn't left his apartment in 3 years.
3 years.
He's plagued with social anxiety and since he works online, he doesn't really need to confront this problem. Until Garrett shows up on his doorstep.
Garrett is a bit...over protective. And he's worried about not getting a good job. His lack of options is what lead him to join the military to begin with and he doesn't want to find himself barely scraping by after all of his time served in the military.
I love these two men. They are so different and so perfect for each other.
I love their honesty. Their ability to see each other's flaws and accept them. I love that they want to become better people for each other.
And I love their scorching hot chemistry. Because holy. crapola. I hope you're good at reading one handed ;-)
Bottom line: this book is why I love to read. I was sucked in from the beginning. I love that we get alternating POV. And I couldn't stop reading, nor can I stop thinking about these characters since I finished.
The book hangover has commenced.
Read this book!!!!!
